about

I was introduced to this delightful and cheeky ballad while living in Austin, TX at the age of 19. At the time, I was playing with the band Poor Man’s Fortune. They introduced me to a version of the traditional Scottish song Young Peggy by Texas-based band Clandestine and it got stuck somewhere in my mental archives. Years later, as I was fooling around with my guitar in DADGAD tuning, I happened upon a beautiful guitar riff that I suddenly realized fit perfectly with Peggy, and my own arrangement was born.

lyrics

Oh where you been young Peggy, and Peggy where've you been?
In the garden, among the gilly flowers
You've not been there you're lyin, Peggy, you've not been there you're lyin', your father saw you in Jaime's arms
My father saw me in Jaime's arms, he'll see me there again
For I will lie in Jaime's arms when his grave is growin' green
Your Jaime is a rogue, Peggy, your Jaime is a rogue
For trysting thou our daughter and her so very young

Lay not the blame on Jaime, mother, the blame all lies on me
For I have slept in Jaime's arms when your eyes could not see
She is to her bower gone, he's waiting there for her
She says I'm blithe to see you Jaime, we cannot meet no more
She takes the wine glass in her hand, and pours the clean wine out
She says I'm blithe to see you Jaime, we cannot meet no more
She takes him in her arms and gives him kisses five,
Says I'm blithe to see you Jaime, I wish you a fine life.

Your father has a bonny clock, divides the night and day
and at the middle strike of night in the woods you can find me
When bells have rung, and mass is sung, and men are bound for bed
It's up she kilts her green dress and rises from her bed
When bells have rung and mass is sung about the hour of two
It's up jumps her father with 'Peggy is away!'
Go saddle me the black, the black, go saddle me the gray!
But before they come to the top of the hill, Peggy is away
